The public and private health system in Portugal

Public Health System

As in France and other countries, the Portuguese public health system is financed by social contributions paid by employers and goods. However, unlike France, doctors are civil servants and patients have no free choice of doctor. When you are enrolled you will be associated with a health center near your area of residence. Access to doctors and specialized hospitals is done by prescription of the doctor of the health center on which the patient depends.

Portugal also has a medical emergency system, available through the number 112. In case of emergency, you can go to the nearest "Permanent Call Center" or to the hospital. Prescription hospitalization of the family doctor (except in cases of emergency) is practically free of medical quality similar to that of France, but in a common room and sometimes with little comfort. To have access to free or moderate health care, you must present the European Health Insurance Card (issued by CAM in France) and your passport or identity document.

Private health system Português

The private health system is totally independent of the public system. It has nothing to do with the public, it will not be reimbursed by the Portuguese social security. In this sector, Portuguese social security does not intervene.

The patient will have to take care of all his medical expenses. It is a system parallel to the public system. All fees are your responsibility, unless you opt for private local or international insurance, possibly supplemented by a mutual.

There are 107 private hospitals in Portugal (almost as many as public hospitals) that are modern and where the organization is a high point. Some are very famous like the CUF, Lusíadas and the Hospital of Light in Lisbon. In the private sector, the person is treated as a client while, in the public, he is treated as a patient. This makes a noticeable difference in reception, organization and patient care. It should be said that in private an appointment with a specialist doctor costs about 80 €. Depending on your state of health, it is highly advisable to have supplementary or private insurance.

Am I still covered by the French health system?

If you are retired within the European Union, you can get treatment in France. It is still tied to your original social security fund.

If you are not retired, you will no longer be entitled to French benefits, except in special cases. Make sure you know the tax authorities and social organizations that manage your services.
